The evaluation of perceived image quality in prints is an active field of research. Colour and sur-face finish, homogeneity, perceptual resolution and artefacts are not anymore rated only by physical attributes, but also in a technology independent subjective manner, in the way of a human visual perception. The category of perceived perceptual resolution has been relatively well researched in recent years, but there existed no method to assess it in an objective manner. The goal of this thesis was to develop an objective computer-aided method of valuation by means of the DS-Score, which assigns values between 0 and 100 to printed matter. The evaluation method is based on a test target comprising a reasonable amount of patches, each of which containing spatial patterns (concentric circles in this case) of varying resolution and contrast. It basically works by scanning the printed Test form, simulating the human eye by using different Gauß-filters, correlating every one of these 100 fields with a perfect reference and calculating the final DS-Score as output value.
The correlation of the computer calculated DS-Score correlated very well with the visual DS-Scores of the previously done visual experiments.
With the help of this method it's possible to estimate the perceptual resolution in an objective manner with a scanner based method followed by a computer aided evaluation, and all of that without dependency from printer or substrate type.
