Abstract:

The work begins with an introduction to the field of reinsurance. It covers the different types of reinsurance, as well as some underlying mathematical properties.
It follows a short introduction to the field of stochastic control theory. Particular attention is paid to the basics as well as the statements that are required for the solution of the problem of optimal proportional reinsurance and investment.
The bulk of the work deals with the question of how an insurance company, should invest its assets, and how an optimal proportional reinsurance ratio can be selected. Optimal in the sense that you would like to maximize the expected utility at the end.
First, a surplus process of the insurance company is determined. This includes the premium, the claims, reinsurance and the investment in a stock and a bond. By inserting the process into the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation, we obtain a differential equation.
This has an explicit solution. From this equation we can determine the optimal strategies.
The calculations are done for both the exponential and the power utility function. The obtained results are, however, not ideal for a real market, but are good benchmark values and can contribute to decision making.
Afterwards the optimality of the obtained results is verified by simulation.
More simple strategies were tested using Monte Carlo simulation against the obtained optimal strategy. Again, the previously calculated strategies prove to be optimal.
