This thesis deals with user-centred design of intuitive technologies with Tangible user interface (TUIs) to support communication in the everyday life of older people. In recent years the technical development of computer systems and mobile devices went on quickly, but the interface with which these devices are operated, mostly remained unchanged. The classical operation of computers using mouse and keyboard or the use of small mobile phone keyboards turns out to be a great challenge for the elderly. This thesis investigates the possibilities of TUIs to make the bene
ts of new communication technologies for older users available. Besides a theoretical discussion with the underlying concepts of TUIs this work deals with the conditions which an intuitive interface or the design of an intuitive interface must ful
l to be suitable for the elderly. The main focus of this thesis lies on the practical analysis of user interaction with a prototype TUI (TanCu) by means of video observation. Finally the results of the investigation are evaluated and presented in the form of design implications for the user-centred development of intuitive technologies with TUIs for older people.
