Feldgitscher, C. (2008). Poly(ethylene oxide)-polysiloxane polymers as matrices for the In Situ preparation of inorganic nanostructures [Dissertation, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://resolver.obvsg.at/urn:nbn:at:at-ubtuw:1-21900
Hybrid polymeric matrices were prepared applying poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) crosslinked polysiloxanes as matrix for the preparation of metal or metal hydroxide nanoparticles or nanorods. A special focus was put on the preparation of luminescent nanocomposites using lanthanide compounds.
The linear polysiloxanes applied (poly(methylhydrosiloxane), poly(dimethylsiloxane)-co-poly(methylhydrosiloxane)), which feature a low Tg and high thermal stability, were crosslinked by Pt-catalyzed hydrosilation reactions with end-functionalized PEO to achieve a polymer with hydrophilic coordination sites which are able to bind metal ions and allow a subsequent in situ formation of nanoparticles. The host matrix can be tuned in terms of swellability and hydrophilicity by systematic variation of the PEO chain length and the ratios between the PEO and polysiloxane segments. It was shown by structural investigations with small angle X-ray scattering that the properties of the resulting material strongly depend on the applied polysiloxane backbone. The hydrophilic PEO moieties allowed an interaction with metal ions and a size-limited in situ formation of nanoparticles. The matrix was furthermore tailored by oligoethers, phosphonic acid esters and acetoacetates to increase the ion binding ability.
Infiltration of the polymer matrix with solutions of various metal salts (FeCl2, FeCl3, Nd(CH3CO2)3, NdCl3, Nd(NO3)3, Eu(NO3)3, La(NO3)3) in methanol, water or acetonitrile and the subsequent hydrolysis of these ions created nanoparticles inside of the polymer matrix such as FeO nanoparticles or different lanthanide based nanoparticles e.g.: La(OH)3.
The Eu-doped nanocomposites exhibited room temperature emission and an energy transfer from the host material to the Eu-levels. The host matrix further was able to direct the structure development, resulting in either nanorods or -particles dependent on the polymer matrix.
The thermal decomposition of cobalt carbonyl led to ferromagnetic cobalt particles formed inside the crosslinked hybrid polymer. Mechanically stable and flexible polymers with ferromagnetic properties were obtained.
Furthermore, unreacted Si-H backbone groups of crosslinked polysiloxane chains served as reducing agents for HAuCl4 leading to red colored gold nanoparticles in the matrix, protected from agglomeration due to stabilization by the crosslinked polymer.
