Bartel, M. (2007). The effect of counterions and solvent on the properties of 3D spin crossover polymers [Dissertation, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://resolver.obvsg.at/urn:nbn:at:at-ubtuw:1-15106
The ligand 1,4-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)-butane (4ditz) was complexed with several Fe(II) salts and the resulting three dimensional interpenetrating networks of coordination polymers ([Fe(4ditz)3](BF4)2, [Fe(4ditz)3](ClO4)2, [Fe(4ditz)3](PF6)2 [Fe(4ditz)3](ReO4)2 [Fe(4ditz)3](SbF6)2) have been characterised. The magnetic behaviour and the influence of the anion were investigated and very interesting new results have been observed. Single crystal data and powder diffraction show that the PF6- anion has the optimal size to fit in the framework and therefore [Fe(4ditz)3](PF6)2 has the highest symmetry compared to the other complexes. If the anion size is decreased the structure distorts as the butylene spacers in certain directions adopt different conformations. It is almost certainly because of this that [Fe(4ditz)3](ClO4)2 shows a particularly interesting effect at 100 K: an alternating HS-HS-LS-LS sequence. (HS = high spin, LS = low spin) From X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements it is shown that these compounds contain cavities which are partly filled with non-stoichiometric amounts of solvent molecules. The effect of the presence of these solvent molecules on the thermodynamic properties was wholly unexpected and intriguing. It was shown to be largely independent of cavity occupation and to be an entropic effect. The theoretical ramifications of these observations are discussed in some detail.
The occluded solvent molecules are not only free to move (rotate) within the cavities, but the smaller methanol in particular is able to diffuse from the complexes, and this rate of diffusion was estimated. It was further shown that [Fe(4ditz)3](BF4)2, [Fe(4ditz)3](ClO4)2, and [Fe(4ditz)3](PF6)2 synthesised from absolute methanol show a negative linear dependency of the solvent diffusion rate with the size of cavity in which the solvent is located.
A structurally related type of complex [Fe(p-xylditz)3](X)2 (X = BF4-, ClO4-) and its m-xylditz derivative containing (1-(3-((1H-tetrazol-1-yl)methyl)benzyl)-1H-tetrazole (m-xylditz) and (1-(4-((1H-tetrazol-1-yl)methyl)benzyl)-1H-tetrazole (p-xylditz)) were also characterised in order to ascertain the effect of an aromatic spacer replacing the usual aliphatic one. To summarise, the role played by not only the overall structure of the complexes, but also the effects of both counter-ion and occluded solvent on observed spin crossover properties was studied in some detail
