Abstract:

Timber is one of the oldest building materials used by mankind.
The basic function of houses, that is, the protection against atmospheric conditions, has not changed, but the requirements on building envelopes are - also because of the stricter regulations - considerably higher today.
This paper gives an overview of different types of timber construction of external walls that are suitable for low-energy houses. Traditional systems, as well as more innovative ones, are discussed. Besides the suitability of buildings and the physics of wall construction, the ecology and sustainability are also considered.
As the choice of the insulation material is essential for most low-energy houses, one chapter deals with the structural and ecological characteristics. Besides the conventional types of insulation like mineral wool and polystyrene, the renewable insulations come under particular consideration.
By means of the computer programmes THERM 5.2, WUFI and WUFI 2D, the heat and the humidity flow of different constructions are calculated, and, for visualisation purposes, represented in the form of diagrams.
