The thesis reveals living conditions of people with reduced mobility and people with disability, from the point of view of urban and architectural composition and specifically of universal design criteria.
Social consequences and existing inequalities are treated as well, examining the existing situation in Greece in particular. The study comprises of domains such as: terminology of disability, prototypes and ideal bodies, social exclusion, attitudes towards impairment, integration, un-employment, the role of the mass media, information and awareness rising. A study on the degree of pupil's sensitisation and information as regards issues of disability is included. Further topics are: space, the built environement, universal access, mobility. Finally, a geo-coded GIS-database built on accessibility criteria, called "AccOrD4u2!" is presented. The demo has been elaborated for the city centre of Athens, Greece.
