Favoriten ist einer der "Problem-Bezirke" Wiens, ein traditioneller Arbeiterbezirk dem seit jeher ein schlechter Ruf vorrauseilt. Hohe Arbeitslosenrate, viele Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund, niedriger Bildungsstand und höhere Kriminalität sind nur ein paar der Begriffe welche die meisten Menschen mit dem 10. Wiener Gemeindebezirk verbinden. Auch wenn es in Favoriten so manchen Ort zum Bestaunen und Genießen gäbe, unter anderem das Naherholungsgebiet Wienerberg, den Kurpark Oberlaa am Südosthang des Laaerbergs oder die Wiener Therme, stehen dem Bezirk viele Leute sehr skeptisch gegenüber. Vor allem ist dieses Angebot eher im südlichen Teil des Bezirks vorzufinden und lässt den Norden Favoritens als historischen Arbeiterbezirk und reine Wohngegend zurück. Durch den neuen Hauptbahnhof, das Sonnwendviertel und weitere geplante Projekte im Norden beginnt sich die Situation zu verändern und die Anbindung zur Stadt ist erheblich verbessert worden. Dennoch fehlt es immer noch an öffentlichen Plätzen und Gebäuden, welche Menschen zum gemeinsamen Zusammenkommen einladen. Räume die junges Publikum anlocken, wo Veranstaltungen und Workshops stattfinden können, oder man sich einfach mit Freunden zum Café trifft. Ich habe mir zur Aufgabe gemacht den Aufwertungsprozess, der schon im Gange ist, zu unterstützen und den bevölkerungsreichsten Bezirk Wiens zu einem attraktiveren Ort zu machen. Den Bauplatz den ich gewählt habe, befindet sich am nördlichen Rand des Bezirks und birgt eine städtebauliche Herausforderung. In Unmittelbarer Nähe des Hauptbahnhofs und der Fußgängerzone Favoritenstraße stellt er einen wichtigen Knotenpunkt dar. Einerseits fungiert er als "Tor zu Favoriten" und andererseits als Kommunikationspunkt zum Stadtzentrum. Die Idee ist, ein Gebäude zu entwerfen welches die wichtigsten Funktionen unseres alltäglichen Lebens vereint. Ein Hybrid, der angefangen von Wohnen und Arbeiten über Kultur und Bildung bis hin zu Freizeit und Erholung, Platz und Möglichkeiten bietet und zu einem Anziehungspunkt für den ganzen Bezirk wird.

Favoriten is one of the "problem areas" of Vienna, a traditional working-class district which always had a bad reputation. High unemployment rate, many people with an immigrant background, low educational level and higher crime rates are just a few characteristics that most people are relating with the 10th district of Vienna. Despite of the fact that there are many places to enjoy in Favoriten, including the recreation area Wienerberg, the park Oberlaa on the southeast slope of Laaerberg and the Vienna Thermal spa, the people have a negative view about the district. Most of these attractions can be found in the southern part of the district while the northern part of Favoriten remains the historical working- class district with purely residential area. A new central station, a newly built residential and educational area and other planned projects in the north are just some examples of why this situation begins to change and why the connection to the city has been greatly improved. Nevertheless, it is still lacking in public places and buildings, which invite people to come together. For example, facilities that attract young people where workshops and events can take place or simply a place to meet friends for coffee. I have set myself the task of supporting the revaluation process that is already in progress. The goal is to make the most populous district of Vienna a more attractive place. The building site I have chosen is located on the northern edge of the district and carries an urban challenge. Due to being in the direct vicinity of the train station and the pedestrian zone Favoritenstraße, it represents an important junction. On the one hand it acts as a -gate to Favoriten- and on the other hand as a communication point to the city center. The idea is to design a building that combines the most important aspects of our everyday lives. A hybrid which offers space and opportunities for the following: living, working, culture, education and recreation. A building that is an attraction for the district as a whole.
