Zamberger, S. (2016). Through process modeling of microalloyed steel production [Dissertation, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://doi.org/10.34726/hss.2016.35203
Numerical simulation is already an indispensable tool for industrial research and development. A thorough understanding of precipitation kinetics in the course of processing of the material is necessary, to entirely exploit the existing alloying concepts and to optimize process routes. The precipitate distribution influences directly the materials properties of microalloyed steel. Due to the small dimension of the precipitates, characterization is often related to high resolution techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy. Numerical simulation offers the opportunity to analyze and understand precipitation behavior and to use this knowledge for materials and process optimization. In this thesis the precipitation behavior of microalloyed steel is analyzed starting from the as-cast condition, where primary and secondary particles are investigated. The next step is the precipitation kinetics during tempering of martensite, which is explored and where a methodology is developed by which it is possible to predict the precipitate evolution during tempering at temperatures above 300°C. Finally, the influence of precipitates on the long-range diffusion of H atoms is investigated. This last point is of essential interest for the application of the material in sour-gas media. The methods and models developed in this work can be applied directly for the numerical analysis of the precipitation kinetics in microalloyed steel from the as-cast condition to the end-condition of the material and its application.
