dc.description.abstract
The ice factory of the Norddeutsche Eiswerke AG located in the former Luisenstadt, in the Berlin district Mitte, is one of the oldest still existing ice factories in Germany. It was built in 1913/14 as part of an 11 000 m2 big industrial area. Since 1995, instead of ice it has been somewhat else that has been produced here behind closed doors: Street art. Colourful graffitis let now the former ice factory shine in new splendour. There are approximately 400 galleries, 6.000 artists and plenty of museums in Berlin, yet not a single house dedicated to the artists producing in Berlin and destined for the art created in Berlin. The former ice factory in the Köpenicker Straße (in the district Mitte) is bound to become an international art site. There is hardly any plot in the district Mitte that is more attractive; situated directly on the shores of the river Spree; this lot is about to turn into a vivid mixture of arts studios, galleries, artistic shelters and a place for emerging visual arts. The thesis describes the history of this site and the existing property, shows a documentation of the existing construction, and last but not least an overall concept of the revival of the area. The project is based on the idea of preserving and repurposing the existing, landmarked building, moreover of planning of a new build, an interaction that should result in a brand new cultural location. The form, size and use of the new premises are going to be defined according to the needs and possibilities in the course of the development of this concept.
