The Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries in Berlin developed the model MONERIS (MOdeling Nutrients Emissions in RIver Systems) to assess nutrient emissions in river systems, and it has been applied throughout Europe and the rest of the world. The model covers seven pathways for nutrient emissions into surface waters which include point source emissions, atmospheric deposition, groundwater runoff, tile drainage, urban areas, erosion, and overland flow. This thesis utilizes an application of the model MONERIS to river systems in the Upper Austria Region. While the model has been applied to all seven pathways, this thesis focuses on emissions via erosion (agricultural and natural erosion), groundwater runoff, and tile drainage systems. This thesis serves as a sensitivity analysis for the MONERIS model in order to guide researchers who intend to use the model in the future. Specifically, the intention is to evaluate the sensitivity of model results on variations of the input data. In order to apply this model to river systems in the future, it is useful and important to reduce inaccuracies of input data when using the model as much as possible, especially for those input data impacting model results most. Once possible sources of inaccuracies are properly understood, we can better understand how to manage pollution and control water quality in river catchments in Upper Austria and other river systems throughout the planet.
