In the work „Built on Sand“ dunes and sand form the foundation of a construction solidifying in the course of this thesis. It is made of concrete, which consists of sand, water and cement. Dunes can reach up to a few hundred meters high, they can move about 200m a year and provide the resource sand which, mixed with the bacteria sporosacrina pasteurii, compose a static base of a caravansary. The main idea behind this project is to use the bacterias capability of biomineralization as a natural source of cement by injecting it into a drifting dune, a process similar to 3D printing. The sand is both part ofthe construction and its formwork. The formation of a structure is induced by the bacterias metabolism and after the curing process and the dispersion of loose sand, little by little a construction emerges.
