dc.description.abstract

The aim of this master thesis is to evaluate the exponential rate of convergence to the unique global equilibrium state for a large class of linear kinetic equations conserving mass. To this end we use the concept of hypocoercivity introduced by Cédric Villani and the method of a modified entropy functional developed by Frédéric Hérau. At the end under certain conditions we can quantify the exponential rate of convergence of three types of kinetic equations, which differ in their collision kernels: the BGK operator, the Fokker Planck operator and the Scattering operator without detailed balance. These results are based on the paper "Hypocoercivity for Linear Kinetic Equations Conserving Mass" written by Jean Dolbeault, Clément Mouhot and Christian Schmeiser. The author of this master thesis added parts of proofs not carried out and information about the theoretical background, especially the concept of hypocoercivity established by Cédric Villani.
