dc.description.abstract
The following thesis is mainly concerned with the question, if and to which extent feeder flights to Vienna airport arriving from the Austrian provinces, Budapest and Prague could be relocated onto rail transport. Fundamental considerations for this paper are, on the one hand, the railway's environmental and economic advantages in comparison to air traffic, as well as the potential of relieving an airport already working to capacity, on the other. Moreover a more productive utilization of airport slots or rather an optimized degree of capacity utilization of long distance trains are reasons to be mentioned. Apart from discussing the background to appropriately understand the systems of both, air traffic and railways, on the grounds of scrutinizing respective subject literature, already existing, international examples, highlighting the cooperation of the two systems, will be looked upon. The insights gained through this approach should serve as a basis for the formulation of preconditions and requirements of such a coupled air-rail system. Consequently the collected results will be adapted to the Austrian conditions by means of looking at current air traffic and railways schedules. More specifically, for a sound evaluation, three specific scenarios of rail schedules will be examined. The main aim of this paper is to evaluate the possible potential of relocating the routes mentioned.
