dc.description.abstract
The use of biomass as a renewable and sustainable energy carrier is one promising option to increase the share of renewable energies and lower the dependency on primary fossil fuels. Biomass is considered as CO2 neutral and independent from short-term availability fluctuations.
Moreover, it constitutes an indigenous energy source available in abundant quantities, leading to a more secure energy supply. A large potential is therefore contributed to the energetic utilization of biomass, whereby thermochemical gasification seems to be especially interesting. It provides broad feedstock flexibility and offers the possibility to produce a wide range of biofuels, like Substitute Natural Gas (SNG), besides conventional combined heat and power production. SNG can directly replace fossil natural gas in all applications and has the advantage to be carbon neutral. It can be transported efficiently, clean and easy within the well-developed natural gas infrastructure and end-use technologies are already well-established. Since biomass accrues locally and due to its low energy density long transport routes are not profitable, as well as questionable concerning the background of carbon neutrality, decentralized small and middle scale arrangements are considered primarily. Therefore, significant process simplifications, thermal integration and heat exploitation are essential to be economically competitive.
In the present work, production of SNG based on a combination of allothermal, pressurized gasification and hot gas cleaning is analyzed.
After a brief motivation in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 provides general background information on biomass as a feedstock for energetic utilization, a classification of biofuels as well as an overview on conversion technologies. A literature review on thermochemical gasification is given and state of the art allothermal gasification technologies are presented. Moreover, an overview on prior art of the SNG production process is given.
Chapter 3 covers the theoretical background with regard to thermochemical production of SNG from biomass. In this context, the production chain is schematically illustrated, the individual process steps are thoroughly discussed and the basics required for mathematical modeling are provided. A focus is thereby laid on thermodynamic equilibrium considerations of the gasification and the methanation process.
Chapter 4 deals with the mathematical modeling. A classification of mathematical models as well as an overview on their application is given. The objectives concerning modeling within the present work and an appropriate level with regard to accuracy and complexity of the models are specified. Furthermore, the software package used for preparation of the unit models and flow sheet modeling is briefly described.
Correlations for calculation of thermodynamic properties are provided and formulation of chemical reactions is described. Finally, model structure as well as governing equations of the single unit models are presented. Within Chapter 5 results from the process simulation are presented and thoroughly discussed. The first part comprises extensive analysis of the thermochemical conversion process within the Biomass Heatpipe Reformer (HPR), including a sensitivity study of various operation parameters. In the second part, results from a comprehensive process design study for a SNG production pilot plant, using a combination of pressurized gasification with the HPR, hot gas cleaning and methanation are presented. The third part deals with the integration of the HPR in a commercial CHP application. Process modeling, thermal integration and validation of simulation results are covered.
Chapter 6 covers the integrated design of the Biomass Heatpipe Reformer.
Within this context, the constructive design is presented and integration of the heat exchanger for preheating of combustion air into the combustion chamber of the HPR is described. The integrated air preheating is considered in more detail, which covers process simulation and thermal engineering. In order to obtain a valuable insight into fluid flow and temperature conditions inside the HPR combustion chamber, a three-dimensional fluid dynamic analysis is performed and presented.
